Electronics Recycling | Computer Recycling

in the Technology Age We Live In…

Electronic items such as cell phones, computers and TVs have revolutionized our lifestyle.  Most households in the U.S. own each of these three items, and often times multiple numbers of them.  While we love our technology, those same technology products contain toxic substances and metals in them.  This can make disposing of them a big problem.

Two ways to reduce the number of electronic items in our landfills is to reuse and recycle them as much as possible.  Any electronics which are still able to be used, yet we have personally outgrown, should be donated or sold to others who can use them.  Old cell phones can be donated to schools and civic organizations for emergency calling use.  Older computers and TVs can be donated to people who are in need of them yet cannot afford the newest models from the manufacturers.  They can also be donated to schools and organizations that need them but may not have the budget for them.

Electronics recycling is an ever emerging industry which is just now really beginning its development cycle.  As more and more electronics are produced and purchased, both by individuals and corporations, the challenges facing the electronics recycling industry are building. Where consumers used to purchase a television and not replace it for 20 years, which is no longer the case.  With replacement happening more frequently, as new technologies emerge, the need for electronics recycling grows exponentially.

In the past large corporations and government agencies were at the forefront of electronics recycling because they were the biggest users of a large volume of technology products.  When this equipment became obsolete or no longer useful they had to find ways to recycle or dispose of it.  Traditionally individuals would store their old equipment or place it in the landfill.

The disposal of used electronics products is a big topic of interest worldwide.  These products are not safe to dispose of in a landfill yet their sheer volume necessitates plans and programs be put into place to deal with them in a safe manner.

Professional electronic recycling companies are able to extract the toxic substances such as lead, mercury, asbestos, and cadmium, and dispose of them in the proper manner.  At the same time they optimize recycling by extracting the metals and plastics for recycling and reuse.

There are currently approximately 500 electronic recycling companies in the U.S.  They range in size from small businesses to large corporations.  As technology continues to grow and change there will be more and more need for electronic recycling programs and companies alike.

Some of the other electronics which are commonly recycled include: florescent lamp ballasts, industrial machinery and medical equipment.

No matter how you look at it, electronics recycling plays a very vital role in the technology age of today.  We love our electronics and we need to love our earth enough to keep those products out of landfills when we are done with them.

Dell Computers Is Partnering With Goodwill to Offer Computer Recycling Services

Recently Dell announced that it has partnered with Goodwill Industries, in New Jersey, with a program they call Reconnect.  The Reconnect Program is designed to help protect the environment by responsibly promoting recycling and reuse of computer equipment.  At the same time the Reconnect program will work to connect lower income people with much needed technology products.

In New York and New Jersey alone, there is a prediction of more than 4 million pounds of used computer equipment expected to end up in a landfill this year alone.  The Reconnect Program allows people to bring their used computer equipment into a local Goodwill drop-off location for recycling.  This makes the computer recycling services free to the donator and at the same time helps to educate people on the need for computer recycle services to keep toxic electronics out of landfills.Reconnect will also help create job opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other employment issues through the Goodwill Industries business model.  Goodwill Industries provides job-training and employment services to people who have barriers in finding employment on their own. The Reconnect Program is set-up so that Goodwill will accept all of the donated computer equipment at their locations around New Jersey.  The Goodwill staff will sort the equipment and determine which are able to be used and which need to be taken apart and recycled.

computer-recycling-monitorDell will handle the recycling and remarketing of the recycled computer materials, such as the plastics, glass and metals contained in the various parts.  Dell has global experience in electronics recycling and can assist Goodwill Industries with their computer recycling services.

Residents will be asked to remove all of their personal data from the donated computer hard drives, and any other attached storage media, before donating their computers to Goodwill. Goodwill staff will provide donors with a donation receipt at the time of donation so they may write the donation off on their tax returns.

In addition to the Reconnect program in New Jersey, Dell and Goodwill Industries have also partnered with each other in other states for similar programs.

You have a few options open to you when it comes to your home computer recycle needs.  Computer recycling is often done at your local landfill, recycling center or through your local electronics recyclers.  At any of these locations you can take them your old computer, monitor, and printers and they will recycle them for you.  However, they will generally charge you a nominal fee for the service.  The fee can range from about $5 up to about $20 in most areas, depending on the items you want to dispose of; computer recycling will be the most expensive while printer recycling will be less expensive.  Many areas now offer you a special day once or twice per year where you can take all of your electronics to be recycled for free.  They will allow you to bring your unwanted computer and printer equipment.  You will generally find announcements for computer recycling events in your local newspaper.

CAR AUTO HAND VEHICLE HUBS TIRE RIM WHEEL BALANCE BALANCING BUBBLE BALANCER TOOL

CAR AUTO HAND VEHICLE HUBS TIRE RIM WHEEL BALANCE BALANCING BUBBLE BALANCER TOOL

$129.99

Would you be surprised to know that in United States approximately one tire per person is discarded each year?
That amounts to approximately 250 million scrap tires which need to be dealt with each and every year.  In addition there are another 45 million which are recycled to make retreads for large trucks.  With the sheer volume, tire recycling becomes a very important environmental issue in the U.S.

Tire Recycling | Recycle | RecyclingIn the old days, before the 1960s, rubber from scrap tires was usually recycled.  However, with the influx of cheap oil imports, which are the raw material behind synthetic rubber, tire recycling became less attractive as an option.  At this time reclaimed rubber became less valuable and the steel belts in tires made recycling more expensive, difficult, and time-consuming.

Scrap tires can become a serious environmental problem and tire recycling takes a large part in helping to relieve the environmental damage.  If placed in your local landfill, this tire scrap can damage the linings which are in the landfill to prevent ground and surface water from mixing with the contaminated substances in the landfill.  Because of this, many people choose to dump illegally if recycling facilities are not available to them.  The illegally dumping become an eyesore and can drag down surrounding property values.

Tire Scrap can also provide serious health threats to both people and the environment.  Because of their unusual shape, they will hold water in them from the rain.

This rain water provides a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.  There are many mosquito-borne diseases which can be harmful to people and livestock.  For this reason alone recycling is a much better option than tire piles and dumps.

One of the most tragic environmental disasters can happen when tire piles catch on fire.  Tire pile fires can burn for months on end, and emit huge black acrid plumes of smoke.  The smoke can cover miles and contains many toxic chemicals and air pollutants.  At the same time the horrible toxic smoke is filling the air, there is an oily runoff from them as well.  This oily runoff is also toxic to the environment and people as well.

Due to the harmful effects of a tire fire, recycling is now common in the U.S.  The first line of recycling is using all tires until they are no longer usable.  Many tire businesses sell partially used tires for less cost than new ones.  The next step in the recycling process is retreading.  Once a tire can no longer be used they are recycled. [drpcoupon name="ClipnGoCoupons"]

It is interesting to note that very little rubber from a used tire actually goes into the production of new tires!  Generally the rubber is chipped and shredded.  These chips and shreds are used in asphalt and rubber athletic surfaces.

Today there are many uses for chipped and shredded rubber.  This makes a large market for tire recyclers for their products.  By reducing the use of virgin rubber, and recycling when possible, it saves both the environment as well as manufacturing costs.

Batteries are a requirement to make electronic items portable.  They give our laptops and iPods necessary power to run while not plugged into an electrical source.  While they are an integral part of our culture and technology, the truth is that they are made up of some seriously toxic heavy metals.  Some of these metals include nickel cadmium, alkaline, mercury, nickel metal hydride and lead acid.  Each of these substances are toxic to our environment if not disposed of properly.

Battery Recycling

Some of the hazards which can occur from improperly disposal of them include:

  • Leaching of heavy metals from solid waste landfills
  • Pollution of lakes and streams as the metals vaporize into the air when burned
  • Exposure of the environment and water to lead and corrosive acids
  • Burning or danger to eyes and skin which come in contact with the acids.

In 1996, the Battery Act was signed into law to phase out the use of mercury in them and to provide collection methods and recycling and proper disposal. Batteries that end up in landfills can potentially leak into the environment and end up in our food chain, causing serious health risks to both humans and animals alike.

Not all batteries are created the same.  Therefore they require specific instructions to ensure each type of battery is properly disposed of.  Current regulations say that they all need to have labels on their packaging explaining to how to dispose of them.  Here is a quick reference list of the most common types :

battery-recycling

Alkaline are the most common household batteries used today.  They are not able to be recharged and should be disposed of through your local community battery recycling program.

Nickel-Cadmium , such as those used in cell phones and digital cameras, are rechargeable.  Once Nickel-Cadmium batteries are spent they need to be recycled and are highly toxic if disposed of in a landfill.

Nickel Metal Hydride are used in laptop computers.  These are not toxic and can be disposed of.  They do, however, contain some parts which can be recycled.  Your local recycle center may or may not collect the nickel metal hydride type.

Button Cells are used in hearing aids, calculators and watches.  They contain silver, mercury and other toxic elements.  They need to be disposed of properly.

While battery recycling is widely available, the best environmental option is to use less batteries or at the least use the rechargeable type whenever possible.
There are some simple things you can do to reduce your need for batteries.  Some of these simple tips are:

  • Turn off any battery-operated appliances when not in use
  • Remove from appliances if they are not going to be used for a long time.
  • Do not mix old with new ones.
  • Do not recharge a battery unless it is specifically marked rechargeable.
  • Do not dispose of in a fire it may cause them to explode.
  • Do not open battery casings
  • Do not insert backwards into any device.

Fire in the Amazon produces a lot of destruction forever. 60-70 percent of deforestation in the Amazon results from cattle ranches and soyabeans cultivation while the rest mostly results from small-scale subsistence agriculture.

The Amazon Rainforest

How can you graduate from being a rainforest wimp? Visit an especially unique park in the highlands of Panama. It will be a wildlife experience for foreigners that come to the area, so they can visit the sanctuary, see the animals, and learn about the importance of the rainforest and why it needs to be saved. TRC President Alex Rubin visited the rainforests of Costa Rica, “We are in the process of finishing up our Wildlife Sanctuary for animals that can never be released”.

Everybody knows the significance of saving the rainforest. In addition, they live their whole lives in trees, only coming down to the ground once a week to go to the toilet! In the wild, they grow algae and moss on the exterior of their fur that serves as a camouflage to conceal them from predators. We all know endangered animals are being destroyed each day and that we all have to take steps to maintain the rainforests. Due to the influence of their diet on their metabolism they are some of the slowest animals you will ever see.

They spend the majority of their day sleeping and eating. Everybody knows the significance of saving the rainforest. We have been working for years now trying to increase the species’ survival. One example is Save the Rainforest Inc that helps lead exhibitions and gets people into the rainforests so they can see for themselves how important it is to save them. EcologyFund is another example of a way you can send money to help save the rainforests. In addition, find out whether these companies and stores give money to save the rainforests.

Survival of the Fittest: Mother Nature always has the superior hand in deciding which animals are going to survive and which ones aren’t to survive under our care. The Amazon Rainforest is disappearing at a rapid rate. We need to teach people about the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest is disappearing at a rapid rate.

Buy recycled paper to thwart more of the Amazon’s trees from being hack down. Plastic and glass can be recycled to avoid the use of additional land to be used for landfills. Buy captive bred pets instead of animals trapped in the wild. All in all, it is the tourist’s paradise; learn more about the Amazon Rainforest and how it impacts Earth.

Rainforest Devastation

Species populations worldwide are tumbling and in many cases species are disappearing all together due to pollution, climate change, over consumption, invasive species, exotic diseases, poaching and hunting, but no peril proves more persistent and demoralizing for the world’s species than habitat loss. Except for rotting vegetation which nourishes the slim tropical soil, the forest floor is almost bare.

Tropical Rainforest Coalition is working to protect and preserve the world’s tropical rainforests, “We are escalating our sister program and our membership program which exists around the world. We have a monkey bridge program that keeps monkeys from being electrocuted, hit by cars, and allows them to get to other troops for breeding purposes. We want everyone to have an understanding of the importance of saving the rainforest and be enthused to help as well”.

Outdoor Play Time & Recycling

Outdoor Play Time & Recycling

Without a doubt the best play time is spent outside in the fresh air and in an effort to remain responsible to the environment there are a few things to keep in mind when out and about.

The best place to play is somewhere that you don’t need to fly to, take a train to, or drive to.  Yeah, your own backyard is a good place but not everyone is fortunate enough to live near a national park.  There are bike paths to find and trails to hike that can be found all over the place, and can be new journeys of adventure with very little effort.  Check with your town or city hall, they may have little treasures all over your community that you go past everyday and are not aware that there is a walking path tucked in somewhere because you don’t take the time to walk in and explore.

Always remember when you are enjoying yourself outdoors that the other people around are trying to enjoy themselves too, so do everything possible to remember to leave the beautiful spaces as beautiful as they were when you arrived.  Today, with trash cans everywhere you look, there is no excuse for leaving trash behind and that means cigarette butts, too.  Take a few minutes before leaving the area you have been enjoying and be sure that all of your trash goes with you, so it won’t become a burden for the next person to deal with.

Spending a day in a park or at a beach will greatly outweigh the alternative to watching TV and running electronics in your home, depriving yourself the added benefit of fresh air and exercise.  Walking the beach will never affect your electric bill and picking up after yourself will only encourage the next person to do the same.  The power to make choices about what to do with our leisure time is great and being able to choose an activity that will not impact your financial responsibilities is a wonderful freedom.

If a mode of transportation is needed to arrive at the spot you’re headed to, try to use the least pollutant-adding means possible.  Riding a bike is better than driving a car, so depending on the distance that is needed to travel, make the best choices that will not add to the pollutants our air is facing.  If it is a possibility, use mass transportation to get to where you need to go.  A bus or a train is always better than driving, but if you have to drive, be sure to pack as many people into one vehicle as is possible.  You may need to drive, but driving one car is a whole lot better than driving four of them.

Making choices to help our great outdoors is not difficult, but there is some thought involved and don’t we owe it to the planet to take the time necessary to make the choices that will benefit it, in the long run?

Recycling: How You Can Make An Impact

Recycling: How You Can Make An Impact

Have you been bombarded with advertisements and news stories about the desperate shape our planet is in and thought to yourself, “I’m only one person, I can’t even put a dent in what needs to be done to make things better?”  With all of the media coverage on issues like, acid rain, loss of rain forests, endangered animals, the depleting ozone layer and even former Vice President Al Gore’s pet project, global warming, it’s an easy thing to feel over-whelmed and small on this great space.  But the reality is this; if not you, then who?

As an individual you can’t control factories pouring toxins into water ways or prevent oil leaks that endanger some species, but you can make an impact, none the less.  How?  First, by not adding to the madness and wasteful ways others are handling items and materials that can be recycled and secondly, and maybe more importantly, you can make an impact by being a leader in the crusade to save the planet by doing the right things.

It’s a well-known fact that when we are parents we are the top role-models for our children and that they will imitate what they see us do.  Even if you are not a parent, you can still lead the way for others by taking on the awesome responsibility of being the leader.  Imagine the people you come in contact with in your neighborhood who see that you don’t just talk about recycling but every week your trash collection is separated and ready for the recycle truck.  What if the people you work with come to notice that instead of having your coffee every morning in a throw-away cup from the local coffee chain, you are drinking from a mug you brought from home that you rinse out and reuse?  Can you just imagine the impact you would have for someone who is maybe not quite recycling like they should but decides that, after seeing that you take this responsibility seriously, decides to change the way they do things and follow suit?

Most people don’t recognize the impact they have everyday on people in their lives that they may or may not have a connection with.  As a leader you “walk the talk” by abiding by the causes that mean the most to you and not just by saying the words.  We are all aware of people around us and never know what we may do that will make a difference for another person.  Don’t misuse this opportunity to make an impact for recycling.

When you recycle yourself, believe that there are people who are watching and making decisions everyday, by watching how you handle yourself.  Big issues are often started with a few concerned, aware people, well before the word gets out to big corporations and law makers that there is a change that needs to be made.

Make every step you take count for something.  Do your part in the efforts to keep our planet healthy; reduce, reuse, recycle.

Recycling and Today’s Teens

Recycling and Today’s Teens

Recycling has been around longer than any of today’s  young teens have been alive and maybe that’s why recycling has never been a question for them as to whether or not they should recycle but has always been more of a “How else can we help when recycling,” kind of thought process.   My own generation, having grown up in the 70′s has a different mind-set.  In fact, I have to remind myself the reasons we recycle, when to recycle and how to keep my family and household up-to-date and aware of the reasons to recycle.

This new, younger generation, is an impressive one, to me.  They seem to be aware of humanity on a global level.  Lessons they’ve been taught in school on a consistent basis have always had a common theme; take care of the Earth or we may lose it.  They are keenly aware of how wasteful prior generations have been and seem to be of one mind when it comes to solving those problems.

When we recycle we are taking a step away from ourselves and begin to think about the Earth as a whole.  It has become obvious to us that by recycling our waste we are going to be leaving less waste for future generations to have to deal with and we are taking an active step in keeping the planet ‘around’ for a longer period of time.

Today’s teens have inspired me by their dedication to helping others who have less than they do and how wasting any commodity or resource we may have, the idea of wasting it is simply not an option.  They are forever coming up with new ways to reduce production of an item or they are constantly thinking up ways in which the item can be reused; they do this without needing to “think” about it, it’s the only way of life they’ve known.

There is an organization that has taken something many of us take for granted and figured out a way to pass on to those who are unable – to feel a little normal.  Locks of Love takes hair donated by people and has that hair made into wigs for people who have had their hair fall out due to chemotherapy treatments or as the result of another disease or condition.  How brilliant to think of those of us who grow our hair without thought or effort, to be able to have the privellige of helping another!  It’s beautiful to me, how this new generation is always thinking about how they can help others.

There are two teens that I know of who took this idea of growing their hair in order to donate it, and dedicated this past summer to doing just that; and the week before school opened in September, sat together and had their hair cuts.  What is remarkable about these two teens is that only one is a girl, the other, a young man knew there was a need for other boys his age to have wigs made for them and took on the challenge valiantly.   Boys don’t have to have their hair quite as long in order to donate it, but it does have to be grown-out.  My awe at teens like these two from town, who at such a volatile age, where self-image is so very fragile, would step out of their comfort zones of following the crowd, in order to do grow their hair long enough for it to be recycled and reused by others, is overwhelming.  By stepping out of those comfort zones they leave themselves in a vulnerable situation, where they can become the targets for some of the ridicule that goes on in Middle school; and yet they still do it.

Maybe they are less likely to go against the idea of recycling because of the timing of their birthdates; it’s just refreshing to know that the idea of recycling is strong in this up coming generation and if we continue to foster that innate responsibility in them, we may just keep this planet around a little longer.

Loon Mountain is located in New Hampshire, right in the middle of the state and as a part of the White Mountains.  If you know anything about New Hampshire, you’ll know that some of the country’s best winter sports take place in the White Mountains.  When you think of skiing; recycling probably isn’t your first visual, but Loon Mountain is looking to change that perception.

Loon Mountain has started a new way of doing things in regards to recycling and energy conservation that should not go unnoticed and will hopefully pave the way for other resorts, all over the world, to follow.

When you think of New Hampshire, the White Mountains, or even the northeastern area of the United States and you picture the area during the winter time, you probably have visions of yummy hot cocoa with tiny marshmellows, hats, mittens and scarves covering as much of a person from Old Mr. Frost, a roaring fire and a foot and a half of snow.  Most of that image is accurate, except, unfortunately, for the snow part.  For more than a decade or so the northeast region has not been able to enjoy Mother Nature’s usual assault of blizzard upon blizzard, resulting in a sno-globe fantasy of winter sports.  While there is still an occassional blizzard, and a lot of the White Mountain Resorts are blessed with a foot or so of base snow, it just isn’t like the winters of our grandparent’s generation.  What used to fall from the sky without hesitation or exception, for the most part, today, must be manufactured.

While most resorts have to run their snow-making machines there have been advances made in their production to further help with recycling in mind and using energy saving principles.  Loon turned to a new idea in snow-making guns where the gun generates its own compressed air, thereby saving on the energy used to have a compressed air hose as a separate unit.  At one place they have combined one “disconnect” between two of their popular slopes; Little Sister Trail and Loon Mountain Park and will be able to service both trails with the same snow-making apparatus.

Other efforts toward recycling include changing their light bulbs over to compact fluorescent alternatives, which are said to use 75% less energy and last ten times longer than the average light bulb.  Bathrooms now have motion sensors for the lights and fans, so energy is not being used when no one is in the room.  New windows and doors have been put in to replace older models that allowed for heat to leak out and the cold northeastern wind to come in.

Let’s take the lead that resorts in New Hampshire have provided and make the changes necessary in our own homes this winter, in the name of recycling and energy-saving efforts.  By following the lead set by resorts like the ones on Loon Mountain, you can bet that more resorts will fall in behind, and utilize all of the resources they have in the effort to recycle.
