in the Technology Age We Live In…

Electronic items such as cell phones, computers and TVs have revolutionized our lifestyle.  Most households in the U.S. own each of these three items, and often times multiple numbers of them.  While we love our technology, those same technology products contain toxic substances and metals in them.  This can make disposing of them a big problem.

Two ways to reduce the number of electronic items in our landfills is to reuse and recycle them as much as possible.  Any electronics which are still able to be used, yet we have personally outgrown, should be donated or sold to others who can use them.  Old cell phones can be donated to schools and civic organizations for emergency calling use.  Older computers and TVs can be donated to people who are in need of them yet cannot afford the newest models from the manufacturers.  They can also be donated to schools and organizations that need them but may not have the budget for them.

Electronics recycling is an ever emerging industry which is just now really beginning its development cycle.  As more and more electronics are produced and purchased, both by individuals and corporations, the challenges facing the electronics recycling industry are building. Where consumers used to purchase a television and not replace it for 20 years, which is no longer the case.  With replacement happening more frequently, as new technologies emerge, the need for electronics recycling grows exponentially.

In the past large corporations and government agencies were at the forefront of electronics recycling because they were the biggest users of a large volume of technology products.  When this equipment became obsolete or no longer useful they had to find ways to recycle or dispose of it.  Traditionally individuals would store their old equipment or place it in the landfill.

The disposal of used electronics products is a big topic of interest worldwide.  These products are not safe to dispose of in a landfill yet their sheer volume necessitates plans and programs be put into place to deal with them in a safe manner.

Professional electronic recycling companies are able to extract the toxic substances such as lead, mercury, asbestos, and cadmium, and dispose of them in the proper manner.  At the same time they optimize recycling by extracting the metals and plastics for recycling and reuse.

There are currently approximately 500 electronic recycling companies in the U.S.  They range in size from small businesses to large corporations.  As technology continues to grow and change there will be more and more need for electronic recycling programs and companies alike.

Some of the other electronics which are commonly recycled include: florescent lamp ballasts, industrial machinery and medical equipment.

No matter how you look at it, electronics recycling plays a very vital role in the technology age of today.  We love our electronics and we need to love our earth enough to keep those products out of landfills when we are done with them.

Dell Computers Is Partnering With Goodwill to Offer Computer Recycling Services

Recently Dell announced that it has partnered with Goodwill Industries, in New Jersey, with a program they call Reconnect.  The Reconnect Program is designed to help protect the environment by responsibly promoting recycling and reuse of computer equipment.  At the same time the Reconnect program will work to connect lower income people with much needed technology products.

In New York and New Jersey alone, there is a prediction of more than 4 million pounds of used computer equipment expected to end up in a landfill this year alone.  The Reconnect Program allows people to bring their used computer equipment into a local Goodwill drop-off location for recycling.  This makes the computer recycling services free to the donator and at the same time helps to educate people on the need for computer recycle services to keep toxic electronics out of landfills.Reconnect will also help create job opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other employment issues through the Goodwill Industries business model.  Goodwill Industries provides job-training and employment services to people who have barriers in finding employment on their own. The Reconnect Program is set-up so that Goodwill will accept all of the donated computer equipment at their locations around New Jersey.  The Goodwill staff will sort the equipment and determine which are able to be used and which need to be taken apart and recycled.

computer-recycling-monitorDell will handle the recycling and remarketing of the recycled computer materials, such as the plastics, glass and metals contained in the various parts.  Dell has global experience in electronics recycling and can assist Goodwill Industries with their computer recycling services.

Residents will be asked to remove all of their personal data from the donated computer hard drives, and any other attached storage media, before donating their computers to Goodwill. Goodwill staff will provide donors with a donation receipt at the time of donation so they may write the donation off on their tax returns.

In addition to the Reconnect program in New Jersey, Dell and Goodwill Industries have also partnered with each other in other states for similar programs.

You have a few options open to you when it comes to your home computer recycle needs.  Computer recycling is often done at your local landfill, recycling center or through your local electronics recyclers.  At any of these locations you can take them your old computer, monitor, and printers and they will recycle them for you.  However, they will generally charge you a nominal fee for the service.  The fee can range from about $5 up to about $20 in most areas, depending on the items you want to dispose of; computer recycling will be the most expensive while printer recycling will be less expensive.  Many areas now offer you a special day once or twice per year where you can take all of your electronics to be recycled for free.  They will allow you to bring your unwanted computer and printer equipment.  You will generally find announcements for computer recycling events in your local newspaper.

Would you be surprised to know that in United States approximately one tire per person is discarded each year?
That amounts to approximately 250 million scrap tires which need to be dealt with each and every year.  In addition there are another 45 million which are recycled to make retreads for large trucks.  With the sheer volume, tire recycling becomes a very important environmental issue in the U.S.

Tire Recycling | Recycle | RecyclingIn the old days, before the 1960s, rubber from scrap tires was usually recycled.  However, with the influx of cheap oil imports, which are the raw material behind synthetic rubber, tire recycling became less attractive as an option.  At this time reclaimed rubber became less valuable and the steel belts in tires made recycling more expensive, difficult, and time-consuming.

Scrap tires can become a serious environmental problem and tire recycling takes a large part in helping to relieve the environmental damage.  If placed in your local landfill, this tire scrap can damage the linings which are in the landfill to prevent ground and surface water from mixing with the contaminated substances in the landfill.  Because of this, many people choose to dump illegally if recycling facilities are not available to them.  The illegally dumping become an eyesore and can drag down surrounding property values.

Tire Scrap can also provide serious health threats to both people and the environment.  Because of their unusual shape, they will hold water in them from the rain.

This rain water provides a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.  There are many mosquito-borne diseases which can be harmful to people and livestock.  For this reason alone recycling is a much better option than tire piles and dumps.

One of the most tragic environmental disasters can happen when tire piles catch on fire.  Tire pile fires can burn for months on end, and emit huge black acrid plumes of smoke.  The smoke can cover miles and contains many toxic chemicals and air pollutants.  At the same time the horrible toxic smoke is filling the air, there is an oily runoff from them as well.  This oily runoff is also toxic to the environment and people as well.

Due to the harmful effects of a tire fire, recycling is now common in the U.S.  The first line of recycling is using all tires until they are no longer usable.  Many tire businesses sell partially used tires for less cost than new ones.  The next step in the recycling process is retreading.  Once a tire can no longer be used they are recycled. [drpcoupon name="ClipnGoCoupons"]

It is interesting to note that very little rubber from a used tire actually goes into the production of new tires!  Generally the rubber is chipped and shredded.  These chips and shreds are used in asphalt and rubber athletic surfaces.

Today there are many uses for chipped and shredded rubber.  This makes a large market for tire recyclers for their products.  By reducing the use of virgin rubber, and recycling when possible, it saves both the environment as well as manufacturing costs.

Batteries are a requirement to make electronic items portable.  They give our laptops and iPods necessary power to run while not plugged into an electrical source.  While they are an integral part of our culture and technology, the truth is that they are made up of some seriously toxic heavy metals.  Some of these metals include nickel cadmium, alkaline, mercury, nickel metal hydride and lead acid.  Each of these substances are toxic to our environment if not disposed of properly.

Battery Recycling

Some of the hazards which can occur from improperly disposal of them include:

  • Leaching of heavy metals from solid waste landfills
  • Pollution of lakes and streams as the metals vaporize into the air when burned
  • Exposure of the environment and water to lead and corrosive acids
  • Burning or danger to eyes and skin which come in contact with the acids.

In 1996, the Battery Act was signed into law to phase out the use of mercury in them and to provide collection methods and recycling and proper disposal. Batteries that end up in landfills can potentially leak into the environment and end up in our food chain, causing serious health risks to both humans and animals alike.

Not all batteries are created the same.  Therefore they require specific instructions to ensure each type of battery is properly disposed of.  Current regulations say that they all need to have labels on their packaging explaining to how to dispose of them.  Here is a quick reference list of the most common types :

battery-recycling

Alkaline are the most common household batteries used today.  They are not able to be recharged and should be disposed of through your local community battery recycling program.

Nickel-Cadmium , such as those used in cell phones and digital cameras, are rechargeable.  Once Nickel-Cadmium batteries are spent they need to be recycled and are highly toxic if disposed of in a landfill.

Nickel Metal Hydride are used in laptop computers.  These are not toxic and can be disposed of.  They do, however, contain some parts which can be recycled.  Your local recycle center may or may not collect the nickel metal hydride type.

Button Cells are used in hearing aids, calculators and watches.  They contain silver, mercury and other toxic elements.  They need to be disposed of properly.

While battery recycling is widely available, the best environmental option is to use less batteries or at the least use the rechargeable type whenever possible.
There are some simple things you can do to reduce your need for batteries.  Some of these simple tips are:

  • Turn off any battery-operated appliances when not in use
  • Remove from appliances if they are not going to be used for a long time.
  • Do not mix old with new ones.
  • Do not recharge a battery unless it is specifically marked rechargeable.
  • Do not dispose of in a fire it may cause them to explode.
  • Do not open battery casings
  • Do not insert backwards into any device.

Excellent power source for remote living. I surely recommend the item. You can feel confident that the Wagan EL2448 Solar ePanel Charger will be your ultimate all-in-one power solution for years to come..

Benefits..

  • 12.4 watts, folds up for convenient transport and storage, ideal for indoor and outdoor use
  • Use to charge laptop computers, cell phones and other DC powered items
  • High impact tempered glass to resist hail, ice, flying debris or force wind
  • Requires only daylight (not direct sunlight), monocrystalline solar panel charges even in cloudy and overcast weather
  • Suitable for trickle charging a wide range of batteries and power packs

Another smaller but very handy solar powered battery charger, which is also a portable system, used to charge up computers or cel phones. The Solio Hybrid 1000 is a popular, example of a solar powered battery charger. The Solio Hybrid 100 has an adapter tip system cable, a USB charging cable, a mini usb cable for Motorola, Blackberry, Garmin and iriver devices and a Nokia adapter tip. The powerful solar panel in the Solio Hybrid 1000 gathers energy from the sun wherever you are, and it’s slender enough to fit easily in a backpack or briefcase.

As an added bonus this device stores power so you have energy ready whenever you need it, regardless of the presence of daylight. The power can be stored for up to one year. With just one hour of sunshine you get 15 minutes of talk time or forty minutes listening to your MP3. The solar powered battery charger provides a DC charge rate of 5 – 6 volts and a output of 0.6 watts.

Other popular solar powered battery charger devices will refill your batteries. When you purchase rechargeable batteries, place them in the charging device and sit them out in the sun. Most of these chargers will power up four same-type batteries at the same time, and will finish in 5 to 6 hours.

Portable solar powered battery charger devices have been used to power batteries on boats and security systems on homes. Because they run on solar energy, this reduces the cost of their use and prevents power outages or gas shortages from stopping the use of these devices.

Using solar power is cheap and easy, because after the initial setup you have free access to sunlight. It is also environmentally friendly. When you use any solar powered device you are reducing the amount of carbon emissions sent into the air. Most power comes from burning fossil fuel systems, but this power is clean energy, and is also renewable energy because it doesn’t deplete the overall supply. Every time you use solar power, a fresh supply is provided the next day. When fossil fuels or regular chemical batteries are used, they cannot be refreshed.

Paper Recycling – It Saves Trees and Makes Sense

One item which is routinely recycled in the United States is paper.  Which has been used and converted back into paper pulp and used to create recycled paper products such as copier paper, newspaper, toilet paper and tissue.  Approximately half of the paper used in the U.S. today is recycled, much of it coming from commercial business programs.

Recycling of  paper is not without its environmental issues.  The act of turning old paper into new paper pulp entails a lot of work and machinery found in large industrial plants.  While no one in their right mind would suggest that paper recycling is not necessary, it is a process which requires a significant amount of energy to complete.  It has to be transported to the plants, made back into pulp, and then new paper and corrugated supplies must be made.  The whole process requires fossil fuels and a significant amount of energy to complete.

Commercial recycling programs amount to about 80% of all paper recycled today.  Businesses of just about any size now have containers throughout their buildings for their employees to put their used paper into.  When visiting a business today you will often find a container for white paper and another for colored.  The different papers need to be separated for recycling .  Newspaper can also be recycled and requires its own container.

Once the containers are full they are generally hauled off by the local waste disposal company and taken to a plant for processing.

There are many ways that you, as an individual, can support the recycling process.  The easiest is to put your used paper into your kitchen garbage recycling containers.  From there you can dump them into your compost pile and they will break-down into soil, just as normal household kitchen garbage will.
Another way you can support recycling is to purchase recycled cards and recycled paper checks along with your recycled paper for your copier .
By using recycled paper products you are helping to support recycling in your area, and helping to eliminate trees being cut from the forests.

Next time you visit your local grocery market be sure to notice whether or not they are using recycled paper shopping bags.  If they are they make a nice change from using the usual plastic ones made from petroleum products.

When you shop be on the lookout for recycled paper products such as recycled toilet paper, recycled tissue and recycled paper towels.  By supporting the companies who make these products you are supporting paper recycling.

We Can Help Save the Environment through Waste
Management and Recycling Programs…

With the ever increasing population of our earth, and the consumerist society which exists today, it is very important that we help to save the earth’s environment through waste management and recycling programs.  There are many different ways to apply waste management and recycling in all areas of the world, but especially with our vast availability of resources here in the United States.  The U.S. leads the world in trash production and any of that trash which can be kept out of the landfills helps to save the earth’s environment from pollution.

With the ever increasing population of our earth, and the consumerist society which exists today, it is very important that we help to save the earth’s environment through waste management programs.  There are many different ways to apply waste management and recycling in all areas of the world, but especially with our vast availability of resources here in the United States.  The U.S. leads the world in trash production and any of that trash which can be kept out of the landfills helps to save the earth’s environment from pollution.

With the age of technology upon us, we need to find ways to recycle technology products which are no longer of use to us.  Home computers are recycled in most areas which allow you to safely dispose of your unwanted computers, monitors and printers.  Computer recycling is very important because monitor disposal needs to protect the earth from the toxic gasses contained within them.  (The same is true for television set disposal.)  If your local waste company does not recycle computers, look in your phone book for local electronics recyclers or computer donation programs.

Another important way to help the earth’s environment
through waste management and recycling is to compost as much organic matter as possible.  Your local community probably has programs for weed recyclables and Christmas trees.  These are great programs to help keep organic matter out of your local landfill.

At your home you can start your own waste management and recycling habits as well.  Composting can provide your home garden with wonderful soil.  All you need to start composting is a kitchen counter compost container and a pile in your yard to dump it on each day.  You do not need any special composting equipment to start.

Another program you can easily start in your own home is as simple as taking aluminum and plastics to your local drop off recycling center, or curbside program.  Many areas offer all residents containers to put their aluminum and plastics in for easy processing.

Many common items you use in your home you can substitute with recycled products.  You can ask your local grocery stores to use recycled paper shopping bags, or you can bring your own canvas bags to the store with you and use those.  You can purchase recycled copier paper and recycled paper checks.  Think of how many trees your family and community can save by just doing these few simple things!

It is also easy to recycle moving supplies and packing supplies.  You can either save your supplies to use in the future or pass them on to someone else who has a more immediate need for them.

It is very important to the health of our environment to find ways to help through waste management and recycling programs.  Think about your life and think of ways you and your community can help out.

Auto Recycling Recycling Scrap Services
Saves Resources and Saves you Money on Parts

What should you do when your car is no longer operable? Maybe you have had an unfortunate accident, or maybe you have been nursing along your 20+ year old car and its last day has just simply arrived. One popular option for disposing of your vehicle is to recycle it. Auto recycling Recycling Scrap Services is one of the oldest recycling programs in the world. People have been dismantling cars for decades and reusing the various parts from them. Once everything is removed from the shell, the car is crushed and the steel sent off for melting and reuse.

A used part from a salvage yard is generally about 50% cheaper than buying a new part from the local automotive dealership. However, the actual price of the part depends on how hard that part is to find on the open market. A rarer part will obviously be more expensive.

Some salvage yards dismantle the vehicles as they come in and sell off the reusable parts.
Generally the first step in the dismantling process of auto recycling is to drain the various fluids from the vehicle. This is a very important step because most fluids in a vehicle are toxic to the environment. Some of the drained fluids are able to be recycled and others are not. Gasoline and brake fluids are resold while power steering and windshield washing fluids are not.

Depending on the type of salvage yard doing the auto recycling, their operations may include dismantling the vehicle, draining fluids from vehicles, crushing the shell of the vehicle, and sometimes even shredding the metal of a vehicle. The metal which is crushed or shredded is then sold as scrap to industrial metal recycling plants. Plastics from the vehicles are either thrown in the landfill or recycled whenever possible. All of the usable drained fluids, parts, batteries and tires are either stored at the auto salvage yard for resale, or properly disposed of.

Environmental contamination is a very real concern for auto recycling businesses. There are many toxic substances contained within each vehicle. The air, groundwater and soil can be contaminated during fluid drainage and part removal. Improper storage of batteries and fluids can also cause environmental problems. This is one of the main reasons why vehicles are generally dismantled outdoors and on paved surfaces where spills can be contained and cleaned up. This also lessens the possibility of fires from flammable liquids such as gasoline and break fluid.

Automobiles also contain other toxic substances such as asbestos, lead and mercury. Proper handling of these substances is one key to keeping them out of the landfill and out of the environment.

When you vehicle has reached the end of its life, know that it can be recycled and its parts used in other vehicles. Auto recycling has been around for decades and it is very easy to see why it makes so much sense.

Household Waste Recycling…Five Steps to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

If you have been looking for a way to deal with your ever growing household waste recycling trash bins, there are a few things you can do which will cut them down to a more reasonable size. Here are five simple steps anyone can take to reduce, reuse, and recycle their household and kitchen garbage:

Step 1 – Reduce First

The first step in any household to deal with excess household and kitchen trash is to look at the packaging all of your foods and other items come in. When you are at the grocery store, consider the packaging of items when you are deciding whether or not to buy something. If there is a comparable option with less packaging, then opt to purchase that item instead. This will reduce the amount of trash that ever enters your home.

Step 2 – Toss It, Don’t Bring It Inside

The second step in eliminating all of the clutter and trash in your home is to sort your mail outside near your trash can or a shredder. I would estimate about 80% of the mail received in my home never enters my house. We tend to get a lot of junk mail and excess items which we will never look at or use. To help keep the clutter and trash at bay, I sort and open all of the mail near the outside trash and recycling container. Anything that does not absolutely need to come into the house is disposed of before it ever reaches the front door.

Step 3 – Reuse

Once items are in your home, and have been used, look at ways to reuse them before they are either recycled or thrown in the trash. This can easily include washing out a Zip lock bag which was used for something other than meat products and reusing your plastic containers for your leftovers or lunch box. Look at each item you would normally throw away or recycle and see if it has another use for you first.

Step 4 – Recycle

After an item is no longer of use to you investigate whether or not it can be recycled in your area. Take a quick visit to your local community recycling center and find out what items they will accept for recycling. Most local recycling centers will accept aluminum, plastics, glass and paper. Find out the specifics in your area and make sure to take all recyclable items to the recycling center.

Step 5 – Compost

Most kitchen waste can be easily composted. It is a myth that composting requires a large space and special expensive composting equipment. The easy way to start composting is to find a kitchen compost container. Your compost container can be something as simple as an old margarine tub or as fancy as a stainless steel compost pail. Place all unused foods into your compost container, except for meat products. Meat products will attract flies and other unwanted pests to your compost pile! Into your compost bucket you will place vegetable and fruit trimmings, coffee grounds, coffee filters and any bread products. Each day simply take your compost container out and dump it in a pile in your yard. Turn over the pile occasionally and you will have an amazing quality soil to use in your garden and around your plants.

I hope these five steps help you to think about ways that you can reduce, reuse and recycle in your own home. If everyone does their part the world will be a much better place to live.Recycling Bins
