What you need to know about Solar Power

Solar power is everywhere because it comes from the sun.  Solar power can be used to power electricity, pump water, to heat your home or office and power vehicles.  With all that we can do with solar power you have to wonder why we don’t do enough to conserve the solar power.  We could use it for almost anything and it would cost a fraction of what we are paying now.  You can make a difference by doing your part is making solar power something you can use.

In order to power energy with solar power you need to know the basics of solar power and how it works.  It takes a long time for heat from the sunlight to reach the earth.  Unless it is concentrated into a particular area the heat from the sun will be distributed evenly over the earth’s surface where the sun is shining.  When you want to use the natural sun light to power your electricity, heat or water you need to know the process to it.

You need to direct the sunlight to a concentrated area in order to have enough energy to power your source.  Some of the biggest solar power towers are set up around the world.  Solar power is not something that a few people are trying but solar power is about the future, everyone’s future.  When you use a light in your home you may not realize the process that brings that energy to that switch so when you flip it on you will have lights.  The energy that it takes to run power to our homes are not a natural way of energy.  Conserving the energy that comes from the sun is the most natural way to equip our homes with energy, heat and more. When we use natural resources we save in several ways; by preserving the earth, cutting down on monthly and over all costs, and no inconvenient power outages.

Preserving the earth helps when you use natural resources that don’t hurt the earths atmosphere and everything in it.  If we continue to use the power that we use today we may pollute the atmosphere so much that the right amount of sun will not be able to make it down to the earth’s surface in the future.  Then we will have no other choice but to rely on our man made abilities to produce something that will cost us more than what it already does now.  Pollutants will also harm life on earth as it starts to close in and start to harm us.  Cutting down on monthly and over all costs can save you a lot of money in the future.
In the beginning you may pay a minimal amount to be solar power efficient by purchasing a solar source.  You can buy indoor and outdoor lighting, solar power windows and insulated doors in order to make your home more solar efficient.  After that initial expense you don’t have the expense of paying a monthly bill to keep your service on.  This also promotes others to use solar power to be more efficient.

When a storm blows through we are sometimes left without power for at least a day but sometimes more.  When this happens we are so use to our conveniences that we have a hard time adjusting to going back to the basics when we are use to flipping on a light switch, using the microwave, taking a shower or bath assuming that the water can be pumped and heated the same as it always is.  Loading the dishwasher or washing the dishes, washing and drying clothes. All of these services require the power to be on and when it is off is when you miss the services.  When you use solar power you are less likely to experience these down times because your power is generated by natural energy.

Fire in the Amazon produces a lot of destruction forever. 60-70 percent of deforestation in the Amazon results from cattle ranches and soyabeans cultivation while the rest mostly results from small-scale subsistence agriculture.

The Amazon Rainforest

How can you graduate from being a rainforest wimp? Visit an especially unique park in the highlands of Panama. It will be a wildlife experience for foreigners that come to the area, so they can visit the sanctuary, see the animals, and learn about the importance of the rainforest and why it needs to be saved. TRC President Alex Rubin visited the rainforests of Costa Rica, “We are in the process of finishing up our Wildlife Sanctuary for animals that can never be released”.

Everybody knows the significance of saving the rainforest. In addition, they live their whole lives in trees, only coming down to the ground once a week to go to the toilet! In the wild, they grow algae and moss on the exterior of their fur that serves as a camouflage to conceal them from predators. We all know endangered animals are being destroyed each day and that we all have to take steps to maintain the rainforests. Due to the influence of their diet on their metabolism they are some of the slowest animals you will ever see.

They spend the majority of their day sleeping and eating. Everybody knows the significance of saving the rainforest. We have been working for years now trying to increase the species’ survival. One example is Save the Rainforest Inc that helps lead exhibitions and gets people into the rainforests so they can see for themselves how important it is to save them. EcologyFund is another example of a way you can send money to help save the rainforests. In addition, find out whether these companies and stores give money to save the rainforests.

Survival of the Fittest: Mother Nature always has the superior hand in deciding which animals are going to survive and which ones aren’t to survive under our care. Rainforest Devastation

Species populations worldwide are tumbling and in many cases species are disappearing all together due to pollution, climate change, over consumption, invasive species, exotic diseases, poaching and hunting, but no peril proves more persistent and demoralizing for the world’s species than habitat loss. Except for rotting vegetation which nourishes the slim tropical soil, the forest floor is almost bare.

Tropical Rainforest Coalition is working to protect and preserve the world’s tropical rainforests, “We are escalating our sister program and our membership program which exists around the world. We have a monkey bridge program that keeps monkeys from being electrocuted, hit by cars, and allows them to get to other troops for breeding purposes. We want everyone to have an understanding of the importance of saving the rainforest and be enthused to help as well”.

Recycling and Today’s Teens

Recycling has been around longer than any of today’s  young teens have been alive and maybe that’s why recycling has never been a question for them as to whether or not they should recycle but has always been more of a “How else can we help when recycling,” kind of thought process.   My own generation, having grown up in the 70′s has a different mind-set.  In fact, I have to remind myself the reasons we recycle, when to recycle and how to keep my family and household up-to-date and aware of the reasons to recycle.

This new, younger generation, is an impressive one, to me.  They seem to be aware of humanity on a global level.  Lessons they’ve been taught in school on a consistent basis have always had a common theme; take care of the Earth or we may lose it.  They are keenly aware of how wasteful prior generations have been and seem to be of one mind when it comes to solving those problems.

When we recycle we are taking a step away from ourselves and begin to think about the Earth as a whole.  It has become obvious to us that by recycling our waste we are going to be leaving less waste for future generations to have to deal with and we are taking an active step in keeping the planet ‘around’ for a longer period of time.

Today’s teens have inspired me by their dedication to helping others who have less than they do and how wasting any commodity or resource we may have, the idea of wasting it is simply not an option.  They are forever coming up with new ways to reduce production of an item or they are constantly thinking up ways in which the item can be reused; they do this without needing to “think” about it, it’s the only way of life they’ve known.

There is an organization that has taken something many of us take for granted and figured out a way to pass on to those who are unable – to feel a little normal.  Locks of Love takes hair donated by people and has that hair made into wigs for people who have had their hair fall out due to chemotherapy treatments or as the result of another disease or condition.  How brilliant to think of those of us who grow our hair without thought or effort, to be able to have the privellige of helping another!  It’s beautiful to me, how this new generation is always thinking about how they can help others.

There are two teens that I know of who took this idea of growing their hair in order to donate it, and dedicated this past summer to doing just that; and the week before school opened in September, sat together and had their hair cuts.  What is remarkable about these two teens is that only one is a girl, the other, a young man knew there was a need for other boys his age to have wigs made for them and took on the challenge valiantly.   Boys don’t have to have their hair quite as long in order to donate it, but it does have to be grown-out.  My awe at teens like these two from town, who at such a volatile age, where self-image is so very fragile, would step out of their comfort zones of following the crowd, in order to do grow their hair long enough for it to be recycled and reused by others, is overwhelming.  By stepping out of those comfort zones they leave themselves in a vulnerable situation, where they can become the targets for some of the ridicule that goes on in Middle school; and yet they still do it.

Maybe they are less likely to go against the idea of recycling because of the timing of their birthdates; it’s just refreshing to know that the idea of recycling is strong in this up coming generation and if we continue to foster that innate responsibility in them, we may just keep this planet around a little longer.

What are the benefits of horse manure for composting?

For the uninitiated, the idea of using horse manure as part of fertilizing your garden or lawn might seem disgusting or strange.  That is why it is a good idea to understand what are the benefits of horse manure for composting so you can justify the effort and appreciate what a great composting material it is.

In some parts of the country, there is already an appreciation for what are the benefits of horse manure for composting because the practice ahs been going on for quite some time.  Composting horse manure in Alaska has been going on for quite a while and is considered quite normal there.  It is only a new idea in areas of the where the culture is not used to horses as much as in rural counties or states like Alaska where horses are a part of life.  But it is a good idea for all of us understand what are the benefits of horse manure for composting because those benefits are many.

If you have not considered using manure in this way, its good to consider an animal manure composting proposal because it can help you understand the good of using natural components for your compost.  When reviewing the benefits of horse manure for composting, the good it does for the environment ranks high.  If horse manure is allowed to get into the water supply, that can create significant problems for animal life, fish and humans alike.  By finding useful ways to compost the large amount of horse manure you have when you keep horses, you are using the natural functions of your prized horses for the good of your soil and not allowing it to become an environmental nightmare.

Thinking through  benefits of horse manure for composting in an environmental light, the use of a natural compost is also healthy because it reduces our dependence on chemical fertilizers.  Non-organic materials that are used for fertilizers are not as healthy for your hard or garden and they create chemical pollution because those chemicals natural get into the water supply when it rains.  Moreover composting with horse manure saves money because you don’t have to buy the materials for fertilizing your gardens.  And because commercial fertilizers are often processed using petroleum products, by switching to natural composting, that goes to reduce our dependence on oil and slow the depletion of natural resources of the earth.

Anyone who has tried this method understands what are the benefits of horse manure for composting because horse manure composts at a higher temperature than other materials.  That means that adding horse manure to your compost will cause it to burn away seeds of unwanted weeds and even kill larva of flies and other unwanted parasites that you do not ant to survive in your compost pile.

The increased heat also causes the compost to break down more thoroughly so the bulk of your compost pile will be more manageable.  And because the decomposition process is more advanced after composting at a higher heat, the resulting fertilizer material is richer in natural nutrients that you want to go into your garden or on your lawn.

Even if you don’t live in Alaska, it is good to know what are the benefits of horse manure for composting. It isn’t hard to find horse manure and often you can find a supply that you can get for free or for very little cost.  If there is are stables or any kind of farm where horses live, their supply of horse manure mixed with hay and other natural composition materials will be large.  Such places are often eager to find people to take away some of their large supply of manure.  So its worth it to contact a local business that uses horse because often you can take all the manure you want by simply showing up with a truck and some shovels.

BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

On April 20, 2010, the oil rig Deepwater Horizon suffered an explosion and sank two days later. Shortly thereafter, oil began leaking into the Gulf of Mexico from ruptured pipes deep on the ocean floor. NASA satellites have been tracking the growth of the BP oil spill as it has spread towards the northern Gulf Coast.

This detailed astronaut photograph from May 4 provides a different viewing perspective on the ongoing event. The image is oblique, meaning that it was taken from a sideways viewing angle from the International Space Station (ISS), rather than from a “straight down” (or nadir) view, which is typical of automated satellite sensors. The view in this image is towards the west; the ISS was located over the eastern edge of the Gulf of Mexico when the image was taken.

The Mississippi River Delta and nearby Louisiana coast (image top) appear dark in the sunglint that illuminates most of the image. Sunglint is caused by sunlight reflecting off the water surface—much like a mirror—directly back towards the astronaut observer on the Space Station. The sunglint improves the identification of the oil spill.

Oil on the water smoothes the surface texture, and the mirror-like reflection of the Sun accentuates the difference between the smooth, oil-covered water (dark to light gray ) and the rougher water of the reflective ocean surface (colored silver to white). Wind and water currents patterns have modified the oil spill’s original shape into streamers and elongated masses. Among the coastal ecosystems threatened by the spill are the Chandeleur Islands (image right center).

Other features visible in the image include a solid field of low cloud cover at the lower left corner of the image. V-shaped ship or boat wakes are visible in the large image. Wave patterns at image lower right are most likely caused by tidal effects.

 Bioremediation is the best choice of all, and also friendly too the earth, for cleanup of oil spills.  Authorities are cautioning that the Gulf oil spill accident could be a real crisis. Some organizations are collecting hair to help clean up the oil spill cleanup. To plan and help in emergency decision making, oil spill models are used by industry and the government. Oil spills have a significantly negative impact on our environment. Another major oil spill was the Exxon Valdez., in that recent oil spill accident, millions of helpless wildlife was made ill.

Exxon Valdez-Litigation and cleanup costs – In the case of Baker v Exxon,  a jury in Anchorage awarded $287 million for damages that were actual and punitive damages brought $5 billion regarding Exxon. The punitive damages related to Exxon’s oil spill in Alaska was equal to a single year’s profit. Exxon obtained a $4.8 billion credit line from JP Morgan and Company to protect itself in case the judgment was affirmed.8 billion credit line from J.P. Morgan & Co. Then this gave JP. In order to create the first credit default swap of the modern area (in 1994), so that JP Morgan wouldn’t need to have that much money in reserve, under Basel I-8% of the loan. against risking that Exxon would default.

Then Exxon appealed the ruling and the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, as ordered by the highest court, Russell Holland must lower punitive damages. Eight years ago, the judge said he’d lessened the damages to four billion dollars, and concluded that it was the best decision due to the case’s facts, and that it was not too high of an amount. Exxon appealed again and the case went back to court for consideration because of a recent Supreme Court ruling on a similar instance, which made the judge make the punitive damages increase from 4.5 billion dollars to 5 billion, plus interest.

Upon sitting through subsequent appeals and heated oral discussions, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reduced the damages award to $2.5 billion on 27th Jan, 2006. 5 billion on December 22, 2006. The court used Supreme Court rulings regarding limitations to punitive damage claims.

BP’s top kill effort – did not close BP’s oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico If employees find sea birds that haven’t died because of the oil, they will bring the birds to a cleaning center or keep them captive somewhere since they can’t survive in the wilderness on their own.  Animals that are kept captive for the reason of the oil spill will be cleaned by professionals as well as volunteers.

In order to stop the worst oil spill the US has seen in all of its history, BP said that it will cease its current methods, and try a new way of preventing oil spillage. LA authorities have demanded that the federal government and British Petroleum rush a plan to make a sand barrier to the oil by dredging and building up outlying islets and sandbanks. Oil spills on the ground and the water have a bad influence on creatures on the land and water, consisting of a lot of water and land animals dying.  

A top White House assistant – and BP’s managing director offered different versions on the Weekend about who gave the first incorrect estimates of how big the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is. BP is using two types of dispersants in the Gulf of Oil spill that are not allowed on oil spills in Great Britain. Experts are issuing dire warnings as the oil spill gets closer to the Gulf Coast. On Tuesday, a top U.S. official pledged that the government would change how they do business with the oil industry. The government will hold B.P. accountable for the massive oil sill in the Gulf of Mexico.   

BP has spoken to the public, claiming to pay the billions of dollar bill for their oil spill in the Gulf. Accidents involving oil hauling trucks can also instigate spills. If water creatures eat the spilled oil, it gets into their bodies, and several die because the oil is poisonous or it suffocates them. After an oil spill and until they are ready to return to the ocean some sea otters are cleaned, they are placed in captivity. Salons nationwide are sweeping hair off the floor to assist Matter of Trust, Incorporated with making the procedure for cleaning the oil spill sustainable environmentally.  

Many people have accepted without question, BP’s position on calling the explosion from Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.  


The location of the oil spill, the habitat’s breeding season, combined with the type of oil spilled enormously effects the marine life. What the oil spill has done to the shore was shown to you on Tuesday. The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard are responsible for making sure Oil spills are avoided if possible and properly cleaned up if not.   Ecologists employing several kinds of biomediation methods against oil spills.

We Can Help Save the Environment through Waste
Management and Recycling Programs…   

With the ever increasing population of our earth, and the consumerist society which exists today, it is very important that we help to save the earth’s environment through waste management and recycling programs.  There are many different ways to apply waste management and recycling in all areas of the world, but especially with our vast availability of resources here in the United States.  The U.S. leads the world in trash production and any of that trash which can be kept out of the landfills helps to save the earth’s environment from pollution.

With the ever increasing population of our earth, and the consumerist society which exists today, it is very important that we help to save the earth’s environment through waste management programs.  There are many different ways to apply waste management and recycling in all areas of the world, but especially with our vast availability of resources here in the United States.  The U.S. leads the world in trash production and any of that trash which can be kept out of the landfills helps to save the earth’s environment from pollution. 

With the age of technology upon us, we need to find ways to recycle technology products which are no longer of use to us.  Home computers are recycled in most areas which allow you to safely dispose of your unwanted computers, monitors and printers.  Computer recycling is very important because monitor disposal needs to protect the earth from the toxic gasses contained within them.  (The same is true for television set disposal.)  If your local waste company does not recycle computers, look in your phone book for local electronics recyclers or computer donation programs. 

Another important way to help the earth’s environment
through waste management and recycling is to compost as much organic matter as possible.  Your local community probably has programs for weed recyclables and Christmas trees.  These are great programs to help keep organic matter out of your local landfill.

At your home you can start your own waste management and recycling habits as well.  Composting can provide your home garden with wonderful soil.  All you need to start composting is a kitchen counter compost container and a pile in your yard to dump it on each day.  You do not need any special composting equipment to start.   

Another program you can easily start in your own home is as simple as taking aluminum and plastics to your local drop off recycling center, or curbside program.  Many areas offer all residents containers to put their aluminum and plastics in for easy processing.   

Many common items you use in your home you can substitute with recycled products.  You can ask your local grocery stores to use recycled paper shopping bags, or you can bring your own canvas bags to the store with you and use those.  You can purchase recycled copier paper and recycled paper checks.  Think of how many trees your family and community can save by just doing these few simple things!  

It is also easy to recycle moving supplies and packing supplies.  You can either save your supplies to use in the future or pass them on to someone else who has a more immediate need for them.   

It is very important to the health of our environment to find ways to help through waste management and recycling programs.  Think about your life and think of ways you and your community can help out.
