in the Technology Age We Live In…

 Electronic items such as cell phones, computers and TVs have revolutionized our lifestyle.  Most households in the U.S. own each of these three items, and often times multiple numbers of them.  While we love our technology, those same technology products contain toxic substances and metals in them.  This can make disposing of them a big problem.

Two ways to reduce the number of electronic items in our landfills is to reuse and recycle them as much as possible.  Any electronics which are still able to be used, yet we have personally outgrown, should be donated or sold to others who can use them.  Old cell phones can be donated to schools and civic organizations for emergency calling use.  Older computers and TVs can be donated to people who are in need of them yet cannot afford the newest models from the manufacturers.  They can also be donated to schools and organizations that need them but may not have the budget for them.

Electronics recycling is an ever emerging industry which is just now really beginning its development cycle.  As more and more electronics are produced and purchased, both by individuals and corporations, the challenges facing the electronics recycling industry are building. Where consumers used to purchase a television and not replace it for 20 years, which is no longer the case.  With replacement happening more frequently, as new technologies emerge, the need for electronics recycling grows exponentially.

In the past large corporations and government agencies were at the forefront of electronics recycling because they were the biggest users of a large volume of technology products.  When this equipment became obsolete or no longer useful they had to find ways to recycle or dispose of it.  Traditionally individuals would store their old equipment or place it in the landfill.

The disposal of used electronics products is a big topic of interest worldwide.  These products are not safe to dispose of in a landfill yet their sheer volume necessitates plans and programs be put into place to deal with them in a safe manner.

Professional electronic recycling companies are able to extract the toxic substances such as lead, mercury, asbestos, and cadmium, and dispose of them in the proper manner.  At the same time they optimize recycling by extracting the metals and plastics for recycling and reuse.

There are currently approximately 500 electronic recycling companies in the U.S.  They range in size from small businesses to large corporations.  As technology continues to grow and change there will be more and more need for electronic recycling programs and companies alike.

Some of the other electronics which are commonly recycled include: florescent lamp ballasts, industrial machinery and medical equipment.

No matter how you look at it, electronics recycling plays a very vital role in the technology age of today.  We love our electronics and we need to love our earth enough to keep those products out of landfills when we are done with them.

There Are Many Benefits of Recycling in Your Community…

Have you ever considered the benefits of recycling in your community? While the benefits of recycling in your community are endless, there are a few which are at the top of the importance list. Let’s take a minute and explore them.

One of the first ways we chose to benefit our local community with recycling was right after we first moved into our new home. We offered all of our moving supplies to other people, for free, on a local community website. Rather than trash or burn all of the large, high quality moving boxes which we had used to move ourselves, we offered them to others who were moving and in need of low cost moving supplies. This was great for both of us; because we got rid of all of the boxes cluttering up our space, and the new movers got free moving supplies. We also made the request to please do the same with the boxes when they were finished with them.

Another way we can benefit our community is to participate in local computer recycling events. Did you know that many toxins live in your computer and its monitor? These toxic substances should never be introduced into your local landfill. So when you are finished with your computer, it is important that you find a way to dispose of it which will not harm the environment. Many areas now off you a special day once or twice per year where you can take all of your electronics to be recycled for free. You will generally find an announcement for computer recycling events in your local newspaper.

Composting your kitchen trash is another wonderful way you can realize the benefits of recycling in your community. Composting your kitchen garbage does not require any expensive composting supplies, a good quality and inexpensive unit is the Odor-Free Countertop Compost Keeper. You can start your composting in a simple countertop compost bucket. This can be a stainless steel compost pail or simply a recycled plastic container from margarine or another kitchen product. While you are preparing meals, and cleaning up after meals, you will place any vegetables, fruits, pasta, breads, coffee grounds, and other materials which will compost. Your compost pile itself can provide some special benefits of recycling to your community. You can use this composted soil to grow fruits and vegetables for your local farmer’s market, or you can even sell this compost to others in your community who garden themselves.

There are no waste products in the process making aluminum a 100% renewable resource and one of the best things you can recycle. You might be surprised to know that within 60 days an aluminum can is able to go from your recycling center and become a brand new can to be used by consumers.There are many options open to you for your aluminum recycling needs. In most areas you can take your aluminum recycling items to your local recycling center, a community drop-off recycling center, a reverse vending machine, curbside collection or charity collection sites.Your local recycling center, or community drop-off recycling center, will take all of your cans and scrap aluminum products and pay you for them by the pound. Right now the price of aluminum is about $1.30 a pound, but varies by area and date. For reference a large kitchen trash bag of cans, not compacted, will pay about $3.50 at the $1.30 per pound price.

Many areas have now installed reverse vending machines. To use one you insert your cans into it and in return the machine

pays you for them. Locally our machines require your cans to be in their original shape, not compacted down, and you can feed them in one after another. Here in the United States many places now offer curbside recycling. The local waste management company, which picks up your regular garbage, will give you special recycling containers to put your aluminum recycling, paper recycling and plastic recycling items into. On an agreed upon day of the

week the local waste management company will come by and pick up all of your recycling items. While they will not pay you for them, they do sell the materials and you see the result as a lower trash removal bill.

Community charity organizations sometimes place aluminum recycling containers out for you to put your extra aluminum cans in. They then take the cans to your local recycling center and use the money for their charity.

No matter which option you choose, recycling is very important to both your family and your community. Aluminum cans are one of the best items you can recycle because they are 100% renewable.
