On April 20, 2010, the oil rig Deepwater Horizon suffered an explosion and sank two days later. Shortly thereafter, oil began leaking into the Gulf of Mexico from ruptured pipes deep on the ocean floor. NASA satellites have been tracking the growth of the BP oil spill as it has spread towards the northern Gulf Coast.
This detailed astronaut photograph from May 4 provides a different viewing perspective on the ongoing event. The image is oblique, meaning that it was taken from a sideways viewing angle from the International Space Station (ISS), rather than from a “straight down” (or nadir) view, which is typical of automated satellite sensors. The view in this image is towards the west; the ISS was located over the eastern edge of the Gulf of Mexico when the image was taken.
The Mississippi River Delta and nearby Louisiana coast (image top) appear dark in the sunglint that illuminates most of the image. Sunglint is caused by sunlight reflecting off the water surface—much like a mirror—directly back towards the astronaut observer on the Space Station. The sunglint improves the identification of the oil spill.
Oil on the water smoothes the surface texture, and the mirror-like reflection of the Sun accentuates the difference between the smooth, oil-covered water (dark to light gray ) and the rougher water of the reflective ocean surface (colored silver to white). Wind and water currents patterns have modified the oil spill’s original shape into streamers and elongated masses. Among the coastal ecosystems threatened by the spill are the Chandeleur Islands (image right center).
Other features visible in the image include a solid field of low cloud cover at the lower left corner of the image. V-shaped ship or boat wakes are visible in the large image. Wave patterns at image lower right are most likely caused by tidal effects.

Exxon Valdez-Litigation and cleanup costs – In the case of Baker v Exxon, a jury in Anchorage awarded $287 million for damages that were actual and punitive damages brought $5 billion regarding Exxon. The punitive damages related to Exxon’s oil spill in Alaska was equal to a single year’s profit. Exxon obtained a $4.8 billion credit line from JP Morgan and Company to protect itself in case the judgment was affirmed.8 billion credit line from J.P. Morgan & Co. Then this gave JP. In order to create the first credit default swap of the modern area (in 1994), so that JP Morgan wouldn’t need to have that much money in reserve, under Basel I-8% of the loan. against risking that Exxon would default.
Then Exxon appealed the ruling and the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, as ordered by the highest court, Russell Holland must lower punitive damages. Eight years ago, the judge said he’d lessened the damages to four billion dollars, and concluded that it was the best decision due to the case’s facts, and that it was not too high of an amount. Exxon appealed again and the case went back to court for consideration because of a recent Supreme Court ruling on a similar instance, which made the judge make the punitive damages increase from 4.5 billion dollars to 5 billion, plus interest.
Upon sitting through subsequent appeals and heated oral discussions, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reduced the damages award to $2.5 billion on 27th Jan, 2006. 5 billion on December 22, 2006. The court used Supreme Court rulings regarding limitations to punitive damage claims.

On Tuesday, a top U.S. official pledged that the government would change how they do business with the oil industry. The government will hold B.P. accountable for the massive oil sill in the Gulf of Mexico.
BP has spoken to the public, claiming to pay the billions of dollar bill for their oil spill in the Gulf. Accidents involving oil hauling trucks can also instigate spills. If water creatures eat the spilled oil, it gets into their bodies, and several die because the oil is poisonous or it suffocates them. After an oil spill and until they are ready to return to the ocean some sea otters are cleaned, they are placed in captivity.
